Cut describes how precisely the facets are angled and proportioned relative to one another — in other words, how well the diamond captures light, bends it internally, and sends it back out to the eye as sparkle. A diamond can have superb color and clarity and still look flat and lifeless if it's poorly cut. Conversely, an excellently cut stone can visually mask minor imperfections because the play of light draws the eye elsewhere. Cut is the one C that depends largely on craftsmanship rather than nature — and it has the single biggest impact on what people describe as a diamond's "fire" and "brilliance."

Excellent / Ideal: near-perfect proportions and angles, maximum sparkle and light return.

Very Good: excellent light performance, barely distinguishable from Excellent to the untrained eye.

Good: solid light return, with minor deviations from ideal proportions.

Fair: noticeably reduced sparkle, as light escapes through the sides or bottom of the stone.

Poor: visibly dull and lifeless, even if color or clarity happen to be strong.

2. That surprises a lot of buyers, because two diamonds of identical carat weight can look noticeably different in size depending on how they're cut. A diamond cut too deep hides part of its weight beneath the setting, invisible once mounted, while an ideally proportioned stone puts its weight into visible spread, making it appear larger than the number on the certificate suggests. When the proportions are too shallow or too deep, light leaks out the sides or the bottom and is lost to the eye, no matter how fine the rough diamond originally was. The certificate describes the stone's objective characteristics — carat, color, clarity, cut, and more — without assigning a monetary value. An appraisal, on the other hand, assigns a value in currency to the diamond (usually including its setting), typically for insurance purposes, and is normally carried out separately by an appraiser, often based on the details in the certificate. For a homeowner's or renter's insurance policy, you'll frequently need both documents.

Red flags to watch for

Be cautious if a diamond is offered with no certificate at all, if the certificate comes from an unfamiliar or non-independent lab, or if the measurements listed on the document don't match the stone in front of you.
